I’m very pleased to get my author copy of “Seignelay Colbert de Castlehill (1735-1811): A Bishop Between Scottish Enlightenment and Counter-Revolution”, published by Palgrave Macmillan. This is a collection of academic essays examining the life of Colbert, or Cuthbert, of Castlehill in Inverness. My essay ‘Cuthbert of Castlehill: A View from Inverness’ is included, and I also contributed to the translation of some of the essays from their original French.

This book (and my article) was originally published in French as “Seignelay Colbert de Castlehill (1735-1811): Un éveque entre Lumières écossaises et Contre-Révolution” by the Presses de l’Université Toulouse 1 Capitole.

The collection is the result of a conference held in 2020 examining the life of Seignelay Colbert de Castlehill, a fascinating man who was born in the Highlands of Scotland and went on to play a crucial role in the French Revolution. Colbert lived through the Jacobite rebellion of 1745, and the aftermath of the Jacobite defeat at the battle of Culloden had a huge impact on his family. I presented a paper, in French, at the 2020 online conference, alongside academics from France, the UK and even Japan.

I have written articles about Colbert before, which you can read by following the links on these pages. I continue to research Colbert’s life. Several people have been in touch with me via this website to discuss research into Colbert, and I am always happy to hear from researchers.
The book is edited by Prof. Alain Alcouffe who, along with Andrew Moore, has worked to bring their excellent research on Colbert de Castlehill’s life story to a wider audience.
The book is available to buy online as either a hardback or ebook, but as an academic publication it is at a higher price point: Palgrave Macmillan design their publications to be accessed through university libraries. I hope that the book brings the study of Seignelay Colbert de Castlehill’s life to many more people.
