new review of “Daughters of the North”

I was pleased to see a new review of my book “Daughters of the North: Jean Gordon and Mary, Queen of Scots” from Undiscovered Scotland: “a superb book… it’s only possible to guess at the sheer depth of research that must have gone into producing an account of the interplay of the lives of two of the most significant women in Scottish history that is both assured and convincing… well written in a style that will be accessible to a wide range of readers: which is one of the attributes that make this a book that deserves to be very widely read.”

Since the book has been released in softback, I have had a few queries – here are some answers to a couple of common questions:

Q: Is the new edition the same text as the hardback? It looks smaller.

A: Yes, it is the same text and nothing is left out. The softback is larger format, so the text appears differently on the page, and that reduces the page count. There have been some other formatting changes as well, which all help to make the softback slightly smaller.

Well – actually – there have been some small changes to the text, as I managed to fix some small spelling mistakes that had been missed first time around! And there is one other change: in the hardback, I said that I didn’t know the exact date of Jean’s mother’s death, but placed it as close as I could to what I thought was the right date – but in the softback, I can now give a more exact date, with documentary evidence. Rather satisfyingly, this confirms exactly what I had surmised in the first edition. The date of Jean’s mother’s death is important, as it affects the Gordon family support for Mary, Queen of Scots at the crucial time of Carberry Hill.

Q: Is the book available in any other format?

A: Yes, it is available as an audiobook, and as an ebook, which you should be able to find on your regular platforms. You may find that these are listed with the original cover:
