The new issue of History Scotland magazine is in shops now – it includes my article on Jean Gordon, and Jean is on the cover!

You can buy the magazine at any good newsagent, or online via the History Scotland website: https://www.historyscotland.com/store/back-issues/history-scotland/history-scotland-vol22issue2-marapr22-issue-124-1/
My article is about Jean’s control of the business of salt-making in Brora in the 16th century: salt was such an important commodity at that time (for preserving food, for example) it was even called ‘white gold’…
Also mentioned in the article is the Scottish Salt Symposium, which I attended in Brora in autumn 2021 – near the site of Jean’s saltworks.
Jean’s control of the salt pans is only one chapter of her fascinating life story: my biography “Daughters of the North: Jean Gordon and Mary, Queen of Scots” is out very soon – pre-order details are HERE

And I’m also doing an online talk about Jean Gordon for History Scotland magazine in April – you can sign up for that now https://www.historyscotland.com/virtual-events/online-lectures//lady-jean-gordon-countess-of-bothwell-19-april-2022
